Is AI Stealing Your Referral Credit? How to Track AI Traffic in GA4.

| Incisive Ranking

AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity are no longer just productivity assistants—they’re rapidly becoming a new discovery channel. Users are finding brands, products, and services directly through AI-generated answers and then clicking through to websites.

But here’s the problem we see all the time at Incisive Ranking 👇

That traffic is usually invisible in GA4.

Instead of being clearly attributed, most AI-driven visits are quietly grouped under Referral, making it hard to understand how much value AI platforms are actually delivering.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through a clean, scalable way to track AI traffic in Google Analytics 4 (GA4)—without breaking your existing setup. The goal isn’t just better reporting; it’s better decision-making.

Why the Default GA4 Setup Falls Short?

Out of the box, GA4 treats clicks from AI platforms the same way it treats links from blogs or partner sites: as referrals. While this is technically correct, it creates two major issues:

  1. You can’t quickly see how AI compares to Organic Search, Paid Media, or Social.
  2. You can’t analyse user behaviour from AI platforms separately.

To be clear, not every AI interaction is trackable. Some tools don’t pass referrer data at all. That means your AI traffic numbers will never be 100% complete—but organising what is trackable gives you far more clarity than lumping everything into “Referral.”

Step 1: Create a Custom Channel Group for AI Traffic

The most reliable long-term solution is setting up a Custom Channel Group in GA4. This allows you to classify AI traffic properly and future-proof your reporting as new tools emerge.

⚠️ Note: GA4 only allows two custom channel groups, so use them wisely.

How to set it up

1. Go to Admin → Data display → Channel groups.

2. Click Add new channel group.

3. Name it something clear, like Custom Channel Group.

4. Inside the group, click Add new channel and name it Artificial Intelligence

5. Set the rule to:

  • Dimension: Source
  • Condition: Matches regex
  • Value: (your AI source regex covering tools like chatgpt, perplexity, gemini, claude, etc.)

Pro tip from Incisive Ranking

GA4 evaluates channel rules from top to bottom. Make sure your Artificial Intelligence channel is placed above the default Referral channel—otherwise GA4 will classify the traffic as Referral before it ever reaches your AI rule.

Step 2: View AI Traffic in Standard GA4 Reports

Once your custom channel group is live, accessing the data is straightforward.

  1. Navigate to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
  2. In the table, click the dimension dropdown.
  3. Select Session custom channel group.

You’ll now see Artificial Intelligence listed alongside channels like Organic Search, Direct, Paid Search, and Social—making it easy to evaluate performance at a glance.

Step 3: Build a Dedicated AI Traffic Report

If you want deeper insights—such as engagement, conversions, or performance by individual AI tools—a custom report is the way to go.

How to create it

  1. Open the Traffic acquisition report.
  2. Click Customize report in the top-right corner.
  3. Add a filter:
    • Session custom channel group exactly matches Artificial Intelligence.
  4. Set Session source as the primary dimension.

This allows you to see which platforms—ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and others—are driving the most traffic and value.

Save the report as “AI Traffic”, then use the Library feature to pin it under the Acquisition section for ongoing access.

The Quick “Right Now” Option

If you need answers immediately and don’t want to change your GA4 configuration yet, there’s a faster (but temporary) approach:

  • Open Traffic acquisition.
  • Apply a filter using Session source matches regex for AI platforms.

This works for quick checks, but keep in mind:

  • The filter resets when you refresh or leave the report.
  • It’s not suitable for long-term tracking or comparisons.

That’s why we recommend custom channel groups for any serious analysis.

Choosing the Right Tracking Method

Here’s how to decide what works best for you:

  • Need a fast answer? Use a temporary report filter.
  • Want consistent, reliable data? Create a custom channel group.
  • Looking for deep insights? Build a dedicated AI report and explore the data further using Explorations.

Final Thoughts

AI is quickly becoming a major part of how users discover brands online. If you’re not tracking it properly, you’re likely underestimating its impact—and making decisions with incomplete data.

By setting up AI traffic tracking in GA4, you’re not just fixing attribution. You’re gaining visibility into the future of digital discovery.
